Using Alternative Energy for Heating and Cooling

Today, there are many more options available for using alternative energy to save money and the environment. These options are still fairly expensive to implement, however, and are not always as effective as the user would like them to be. In addition, there is the cost of converting different appliances over to be able to use the alternative energy source, such as is the case with biofuels. However, there are some alternative energy sources which people can use in their homes to reduce cost, such as alternative energy for heating and cooling the home.

Geothermal

Geothermal energy is now being used as an alternative energy source for heating and cooling homes. These units are heat pumps that run on the idea that the commercial units use when utilizing the geothermal energy that is stored in the ground. In commercial units, the turbines are turned by the steam that is stored under the ground. In the heat pumps using alternative energy for heating and cooling the home, the process is internalized so that it can be repeated indefinitely in the cycle.

The heat pump process is used in refrigerators every day. Basically, the heat is moved from a low temperature source to a high one in a cycle. This process allows other things to happen in the alternative energy heating and cooling system. There is evaporation, compression, condensation and expansion which all occur as the heat is moved from these low temperatures to the high temperatures or vice versa. The heat that is produced in the process can then be pumped into the home or if the process is reversed, the cool air can be pumped into the home to cool it.

One down side to using these alternative energy heating and cooling units is that they do require large amounts of water in order for them to work properly. If the home is on a well system, there must be enough water supplied by the well to allow the heat pump to work in addition to having enough water to supply the home. If the person is on a city water supply, the water must be clean enough that it will not damage the alternative energy heating and cooling unit over the course of time, and the person must expect a higher water bill than he is used to having. There can also be issues in times of a drought where people are asked to conserve water in their neighborhoods.
