In the rush to build new technology that will allow the use of alternative energy sources, there have been great leaps and bounds made which makes these sources more cost efficient to use today than every before. The use of wind power, solar power, geothermal power and more has begun to make changes in the environment as these renewable resources are used, which do not cause damage to the environment and save on fossil fuels. There are many different options that can be found in alternative energy sources, some of which are good for powering single homes while others can help with the power grids for entire cities. It is important to consider the good and bad sides to the use of these sources so that the best option can be chosen to fit one particular situation.
The Down Side
With wind power, there are several negative affects of this alternative energy source. One negative affect of wind as an alternative energy source is that the turbines that are used are so huge. The turbines need a lot of space in order to operate which means that they need large spaces of land where there are not any trees that could hinder the turbines. Also, in order to generate a large amount of power, these turbines need to be placed on what is called a turbine farm so that there are many of them working together to produce the energy needed for one power grid. Also, wind is not a consistent source, even though it is renewable. Different days have different amounts of wind blowing in the environment which means different amounts of power will be produced each day.
With solar power, the negative affects of this alternative energy source are similar. Different days have different amounts of sunlight, which affects the amount of power produced by the panels. Also, in order to create enough power to be used commercially, the panels have to be very large which is expensive and also takes up a lot of space. Another negative affect of solar alternative energy is that it is expensive to re-outfit a home with the solar roofing tiles or solar water heater in order to reduce the electric bill in the home.
With geothermal power, there are also negative affects of this alternative energy source. If the sites are not drilled properly, there are other dangerous gasses under the ground that can be released and cause damage to the environment.
